2. EARTH DAY LESSONS. . .

a.  APPLES FOR THE TEACHER LINKS
Renewable energy resources are the topic of the day, and all for good reason. And what could be better than harnessing our major energy supplier, the one that gets all the others going? Students will consider solar power in this collection of timely lesson plans, covering early elementary grades through high school. Middle and high school students can conduct experiments and hands-on activities to learn about photovoltaic systems, to measure solar electricity, research the economics behind renewable energy, and more. Student worksheets are included for each lesson.

b.  TRASH AND CLIMATE CHANGE:
Upper elementary students will become Planet Protectors with these printable worksheets and activities from the Environmental Protection Agency. They will explore recycling with paper, metal, yard waste, plastics, and glass, and do some mathematical calculations with carbon, aluminum, and newspaper (answers are included). A crossword, writing activity, and game are also included in this Earth Day resource.

c.  BIOSPHERE & GLOBAL WARMING WEB TREK:
An answer key is provided for this Web Trek, where upper elementary and middle school students will use selected resources to research the biosphere and the current issues surrounding it, focusing on global warming and increased carbon content in the carbon cycle. A build your own biosphere lesson plan is included as an optional exercise.

d.  SHOPPING GREEN:
What does it mean to shop green? And how can shopping with the environment in mind actually help environmental issues? Find out more with this guide.

e.  DESIGN A COMPOST BIN:
It's not all that difficult to get a compost bin going at your school, and students will enjoy recycling their lunch wastes for some great compost for school gardens. Find out how to turn a plastic storage bin into your own personal compost bins at school (note that adult help is required for this project).

f.  THE LIFE CYCLE OF A CELL PHONE:
Almost everyone has one - so much so that pay phones are being taken down across the country. Posters show how cell phones are made, explain a life cycle for manufactured products, and focus on the great debate on resources v.s. products. Find out how to responsibly recycle cell phones and deal with the separate components, particularly batteries, with these classroom posters for Earth Day.
